To be blunt, game development is a field, not a job. To say you want a job as a game developer is like saying you want a career in real estate or sports or activism.
You must pick a specific area and decide what role you want to play in the industry.

The Big Three in Digital Games
Within the gaming industry, there are three main divisions related to game development:
- Art
- Design
- Engineering
Then, there are various types of game design support teams, including:
- Audio
- Infrastructure
- Production
- Quality Assurance
3 Steps to Getting a Game Developer Job
Step 1: Decide what you want to be.
You must decide exactly what you want to do. Most young adults choose art, design or engineering based on their backgrounds.
- Were you good at it in high school?
- Have you always had a knack for it?
- Has it always been your dream to learn it?
- Do you have the qualities you need to excel at it?
- Are you more comfortable checking the quality of others’ work?
If you have zero background, skills or experience, but you have a passion for learning, creating your own games helps you determine what you like most. Then, you can build a career based on your experience.
Step 2: Determine your goal.
Decide on your career goal within the game development industry:
- Are you looking for full-time employment with a major corporation or a small business or will this be a side hustle while you keep your day job in another industry?
- Do you want to open your own independent solopreneur studio or work with your own team of contractors or work for someone else in a AAA studio?
Step 3: Create a plan.
Now that you have an end goal for your career in mind, you need to build a plan. Create a checklist of everything you need to get you to where you want to go… AND GO FOR IT!
What Experience Is Needed for Game Development?
Entry Level – You’ll need 2-10 years of experience just to get your foot in the door of a AAA studio. But an independent studio or entrepreneur looking for a freelancer might give you a shot much sooner. Once you get in the door, you can cross-train your way into a specific area and make your mark while building your skills and network within a specific niche.
How to Get Game Developer Experience
